On August 19, 2026, Google announced five new learning features for Search and Gemini. The AI-powered tools are designed for students and combine visual simulations, automated quizzes, image analysis for assignments, live video coaching, and collaborative workspaces. Most features are available worldwide in English, some free in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and some initially in the AI Mode Labs experiment for US users.
Interactive Visualizations for Complex Concepts
Since the announcement, Search can create custom simulations and visual tools, according to Google. A search for "pH scale" displays an interactive visualization in the AI Overview. Users can ask follow-up questions – for example, "plotting citrus fruits on the pH scale" – and AI Mode generates a customized visualization. The generative UI features are available globally in English and have been rolled out in AI Overviews.
Practice Quizzes with Content from Test-Prep Providers
Students can access interactive quizzes directly in Search covering science, math, humanities, and foreign languages. The feature is available free in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google partners with The Princeton Review, Careers360, PhysicsWallah, and Akira Enem. The quizzes support standardized tests such as ACT, AP, ENEM, GRE, JEE, LSAT, MCAT, NEET, and SAT. Each answer includes an explanation and links for further learning. For example, searching for "create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocab words to help me prep for the SAT" delivers a quiz featuring frequent SAT vocabulary.
An earlier version of this feature had existed since March 2021 under the name Practice Problems for math, chemistry, and physics at US high schools.
Lens for Assignment Coaching and Error Analysis
Starting in August 2026, the Lens feature in the Google App (Android and iOS) will be expanded with interactive learning features. Users photograph their assignments, tap the camera icon, and receive explanations in the AI Overview, hints about potential errors, and coaching with difficult problems.
Search Live: Real-Time Support with Video Input
Search Live brings capabilities from Project Astra into AI Mode. Users can discuss difficult concepts in real-time via video input and gain access to web links. Google describes the tool as "experts on speed dial" for learners and parents. One use case: support during science experiments at home. The feature was first announced in January 2026.
Canvas for Project-Based Learning with Upload Function
Canvas will be available in the coming weeks starting January 2026 on desktop browsers for users of the AI Mode Labs experiment in the US. The side panel collects content and enables follow-up questions to refine projects. A new upload function allows users to upload study materials such as class notes or course syllabus and contextualize answers with them. Users can return to saved Canvas projects and continue working there.
Complementary Tools in Gemini and NotebookLM
In August 2026, Google introduced a new Student Hub in the Gemini app that centralizes school-related AI tools. According to the January 2026 announcement, the Gemini AI Pro Plan includes two terabytes of storage for notes, projects, and work. NotebookLM – mentioned in November 2025 – converts personal sources into quizzes, flashcards, or audio and video content.
Security and Criticism
Google emphasizes that all educational tools are designed "by design" to be secure. In response to criticism of a test report, the company stated that it tested "a narrow set of ambiguous and contrived queries that do not reflect how people use Search" and was not an effective measurement method for product safety and usefulness.
