Bidirectional Synchronization Without Programming Knowledge

A key feature of Sheets Canvas is bidirectional real-time synchronization. Changes made on the Canvas are immediately reflected in the original spreadsheet and vice versa. For example, when a user moves task cards on a Kanban board or adds new entries, these changes update directly in the source sheet.

Users need neither formulas nor programming code. Creation happens entirely through natural language prompts. After generation, Canvas instances can be continuously refined through additional prompts – such as entering "Convert this dashboard to dark mode".

The feature supports diverse visualization formats:

Availability and Technical Limitations

The feature is available exclusively on the web version. The user's language profile must be set to English (as of August 2026). Canvas does not work on mobile devices, with very large datasets, with download functions disabled, or in files stored on third-party storage. The feature only uses data from a single sheet tab.

With edit access, users can modify, delete, or add data directly in the Canvas interface. With comment or view-only permission, data modification is not possible. Creating and editing Sheets Canvas is subject to per-user usage limits.

Rollout Schedule and Availability by Account Type

For Rapid Release domains, the expanded rollout began on August 10, 2026 – before the public announcement on August 13. For Scheduled Release domains, the gradual rollout begins on August 31, 2026. Full feature visibility can take up to 15 days, potentially longer for Rapid Release.

The feature is available for Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google AI Pro for Education, and AI Expanded Access. Since Canvas exists as a tab in Google Sheets, it inherits the same sharing settings as the spreadsheet and enables real-time collaboration without additional tools.

Creation via Three Access Points

Users can generate Canvas via the side panel (Tools → Create Canvas), the menu bar (Insert → Create Canvas), or the status bar (Canvas menu → Create Canvas). After generation, Canvas can be renamed, data edited directly, further customizations made via prompt, and shared via a copyable link. To access the underlying data, an "View data" option is available.

For optimal performance, Google recommends using standard Google Sheets files. For Gemini features in Excel files, these must be saved as Google Sheets.
